1982 Diamond Back Ridge Runner

Diamond Back Ridge Runner

The Diamond Back Ridge Runner was the first production mountain bike manufactured by Centurion in Japan. Both the Ridge Runner and the Specialized Stumpjumper were the first two production mountain bike made in the world.

The Ridge Runner was Diamond Backs only lugged Champion 5 Chromalloy triple butted frame. Its was the highest quality  production mountain bike in its time. This frame was hand built.

After 1 to 2 years it was replaced with the lesser quality, 1983/84 Ridge Runner II. The Ridge Runner II was a TIG welded, non lugged, Cr-Mo 4130 double butted frame manufactured in Taiwan and was mass produced.

The geometry of the frame had an extra long rear triangle which made it very stable on the trail. It had all the braze on mounts for touring racks, fenders, and 2 water bottle cages. The first production run had rack mounts at the base of the front fork and in the middle of the fork. The second production run only had brazeons on the bottom of the fork.

It was released in two two-toned combinations, black with silver trim, and silver with black trim.

The frame area surrounding the dropouts is painted over chrome plating.

The diamond shaped handle bars are unique to Diamond Backs and the Ridge Runner is the only model where the bars incorporated a brake cable stay.
