Bicycle Accessories

  • GIRO bike helmet - Must have item - Saved my life on a low speed fall. I hit the ground so hard with my head that it broke into a dozen pieces.
  • Specialized RESOLUTION D2 PRO Tires
    • PRO: Fast, good grip, nice and squishy
    • CON: Too soft, they wore out in 300 miles.
  • Ritchey Z-Max Millennium Tires
    • PRO: good choice for overall terrain. The cheaper harder rubber is better for this type of ride.
    • CON: performed poorly on loose gravel roads and wore fast.
      • RECOMMENDATION: Go for the fattest tires. The may offer more resistance, but they will absorb more shock, offer better traction on loose gravel roads, and will ultimately give a more efficient and satisfying ride.
  • Compass Bell - A Bell is a must have to alert bears in closed in areas. I scared off four grizzly bears with mine that I am aware of. The compass part is handy and convenient to check your GPS for accuracy. During the trip I found I had to recalibrate my GPS many times because it did not agree with my Bell compass.
  • Bar-ends
    • PRO: Allows you to move your hands to different positions.
    • CON: None
      • RECOMMENDATION: Install foam grips on the ends and then wrap them with handle bar tape for extra padding and better gripping.
  • Brooks Flyer seat
    • PRO: Excellent for long days in the saddle. Springs help make wash board roads more bearable.
    • CON: Heavy
  • Cateye HL-300 400 candle power LED light
    • PRO: Excellent batter life. Can be easily removed and used as a flash light.
    • CON: Poor lighting. Not bright enough to adequately light up dirt roads
  • 4 Trek plastic water bottle cages
    • PRO: Cheap, plastic, serious grip. Best choice for BOB trailers and bottom side frame mounts. Shave off bottle lock and MSR fuel bottles fit great up to 33oz.
    • CON: Bottles are too hard to pull out for use as a primary holder.
  • Specialized Rib Cage MTB
    • Too fragile - mine broke
  • Specialized clear top water bottles
    • Clear tops made it easy to see when they need cleaning. Bacteria likes to hide in the threads and the bit valve.
